About Me

In my work I explore senses of temporality as we explore them through objects. Similar to feelings of nostalgia one gets while looking at old well-worn objects and how we imagine their stories have lived out, while imagining our own experiences or possible experiences with these objects. I feel this most frequently when looking at buildings and other architecture, a uniquely interactive and public form of art and expression, where every style and material has a corresponding time period attached to it. With this in mind I explore architectural and rigid sculptural forms, using surface texture, design, and firing method to imitate worn surfaces that evoke feelings of the past.

Translating these ideas into my pottery, I try to find a balance between proportions and form. Using sharp angles and surface additions and design to resemble architectural motifs, alongside atmospheric firing methods to create expressive surfaces from the time experienced by the work in the kiln’s environment. As well as the unique intimacy and interactability of a handmade object paralleling the idea of architecture as publicly interactable art.

These themes stem from my time being around architecture and pottery from a young age. My grandfather is a potter and taught me the craft from a relatively young age, while my grandmother was an architect (lighting designer to be more specific); I think it’s from them where I draw these qualities and aesthetics into my work. The generationality of learning a craft from your elder and how that practice develops over time. As well as how the qualities of the people and places we are around shape ourselves and objects.
